SeaLink Northern Territory invites locals and visitors alike to experience one of the Top End's most iconic cultural and sporting events, with a special weekend of Tiwi Island adventures this July.
From the colour and rhythm of the Tiwi Islands Cultural Festival on Saturday 19 July to the electric atmosphere of the Tiwi Islands Football Grand Final on Sunday 20 July, it's a weekend that captures the spirit of the Tiwi Islands like no other. Held annually on Bathurst Island, the Tiwi Grand Final is more than just football—it's a vibrant celebration of culture, community and Tiwi pride.
SeaLink's all-inclusive Grand Final Day Package includes:
- Return ferry travel from Darwin
- Entry to the Patakijiyali Museum and the Tiwi Art Gallery
- A souvenir cooler bag with ice pack
- A hearty lunch
SeaLink has proudly supported the Tiwi Islands Football League through sponsorship and partnership for many years. This long-standing relationship reflects a deep respect for the region's sporting culture and a strong commitment to creating opportunities for young Tiwi talent both on and off the field.
“This weekend brings together everything that makes the Tiwi Islands so special – sport, art, tradition and community,” said Etienne Raubenheimer, General Manager of SeaLink Northern Territory.
“It's an unforgettable experience, and SeaLink is proud to help make it accessible to visitors while supporting the incredible talent and culture of the Tiwi people,” Mr Raubenheimer continued.
This year's footy celebration holds special significance as Michael Long, one of the most influential figures in Australian football and a proud Tiwi man, is recognised with the NAIDOC Week Lifetime Achievement Award. From the red dirt of the Tiwi Islands to AFL greatness and national advocacy for Indigenous rights, Long's legacy continues to inspire. His influence is especially felt on Grand Final day, as the next generation of Tiwi stars take to the field.
Those arriving a day early can also attend the Tiwi Islands Cultural Festival, a one-day event featuring traditional dance, storytelling, live music, and art demonstrations. Visitors can meet community leaders, browse and purchase authentic Tiwi artworks directly from local artists, and immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the Tiwi people. SeaLink will operate ferry services on both days, making it easy to enjoy the full weekend experience.
Can't make it for the Grand Final weekend? SeaLink's Tiwi by Design tour offers the chance to experience the magic of the Tiwi Islands from April through November. Operating three times per week, this immersive cultural journey includes return ferry travel from Darwin to Bathurst Island, a traditional Tiwi welcome ceremony, a guided walking tour with local Tiwi guides, a visit to the art centre, and a hands-on screen-printing workshop where guests create a unique souvenir to take home.
“The Tiwi by Design tour is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to connect with the people, stories, and vibrant artistry of this remarkable island community,” Mr Raubenheimer said.
The Grand Final event sells out fast each year and early bookings are strongly recommended. To book a Tiwi by Design adventure or to learn more about the Tiwi Grand Final Day Package and Cultural Festival ferry services, visit:
