Destination New South Wales

With slow and sustainable travel on the rise, more international travellers are hitting the road in New South Wales (NSW) with road trips becoming a popular way to explore the state. In 2024, approximately 430,000 visitors from places like the UK, US, China, and New Zealand chose to road trip through NSW, with the mix of diverse landscapes and a robust electric vehicle network making it easier - and more appealing - for people to take the scenic route in a more sustainable way.

The state's nine curated EV-friendly routes – developed as part of the NSW Government's investment of $199 million to expand EV charging infrastructure across regional NSW - cater to modern travellers, featuring at least two fast-charging plugs and one destination charger every 100km. With modern EVs averaging 400km per charge, these routes offer the perfect opportunity for sustainable exploration and saw NSW awarded a perfect 10/10 by the Electric Vehicle Council for its public charging network in 2024.

Among the standout roadtrips is the Grand Pacific Drive, a two-day route from Sydney to Jervis Bay, featuring highlights such as the Sea Cliff Bridge, Kiama Blowhole, and Jervis Bay's pristine beaches. The Greater Blue Mountains Drive offers stunning views and exciting experiences, including the world's steepest railway at Scenic World and a visit to the iconic Three Sisters rock formation.

From world-class surf to world-famous wineries, adventure beckons at every turn on the Central Coast & Hunter Valley Road Trip. This five-day road trip takes travellers from the vibrant hub of Newcastle, through the serene shores of Lake Macquarie, to the enchanting, eco-certified Central Coast and the vine-covered hills of Hunter Valley wine country.

The Legendary Pacific Coast spans four days from Sydney to Tweed Heads, passing through picturesque Port Stephens, South West Rocks, and Coffs Harbour. It's ideal for families, with wildlife encounters, amusement parks, and scenic surf beaches.

The Kosciuszko Alpine Way guides adventurers through the Snowy Mountains on a four-day journey, from the Big Merino in Goulburn to hiking in Kosciuszko National Park. This route offers year-round outdoor activities, from truffle hunting in Cooma to mountain biking in Jindabyne.

With a diverse mix of stunning landscapes, and over 3000 new EV chargers at more than 1,100 sites, NSW is well-positioned to lead Australia's road trip revival. There's no better time to explore NSW by road.
