The process of producing cultured pearls requires a trained eye, steady hands, and years of experience. At Willie Creek Pearls, our expert pearling technicians are responsible for the delicate work of seeding oysters and harvesting pearls - ensuring both quality and oyster health every step of the way.
Among our seasoned team are three long-time technicians who have returned season after season: Hiro Akune, Jodi Koleniuk-Neville, and Mel Carrington. Hiro began his journey in pearling at just 17, travelling from Kagoshima, Japan to Broome. Over the past 50+ years, he's worked across every role - from diver to skipper to technician - and has earned deep respect across the industry for his precision and knowledge.
Jodi has been in the pearling industry for over 25 years, bringing skill, care, and versatility to her role. A former drift diver and award-winner for professional excellence, she's known for her steady hand and warm presence on the team.
Mel, with more than 30 years in the field, rounds out the trio. As a contract pearl technician and small business owner, she brings not only expertise but a deep connection to Broome's pearling and agricultural communities.
In this image, Hiro is sorting through the 2024 harvest - one that he, Jodi, and Mel personally tended to from start to finish.
